NDIS

The NDIS is a new way of providing supports to Australians who are living with a disability or mental illness.  The NDIS supports people to achieve goals, participate in the community and live a full and ordinary life.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for implementing the NDIS, undertaking eligibility assessment and developing plans with people who apply for NDIS supports.

Who is ellegible for NDIS

Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few different things such as:

Location:

You need to have been living in an area where the scheme is already rolled out

Age:

You need to be under 65 years at the time of your application

Residency:

You need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa

Disability:

You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.

Early Intervention:

You might be eligible if early intervention would substantially improve your functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for you or your child.

Free of charge translation, interpreter and other assistance is available.

What kind of supports does the NDIS fund?

The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports. Reasonable and necessary supports are those that will help you:

- Pursue your goals and aspirations

- Be more independent

- Take part in social activities and work

- Actively take part in the community

- Enjoy an ordinary life.

These supports are related to your disability and don’t include day-to-day living costs not related to your disability support needs, they represent value for money, they are likely to be effective and work for you, they take into account informal supports given to you by your family, carers, networks, and the community, and take into account other formal supports you have like health and education services. You will get to choose when and where you receive these supports and which disability service providers you work with
